Ransom Demanded by Reddit Hackers Surpasses $4.5 Million, Amidst API Pricing Modifications

A ransomware group has taken credit for the hack on Reddit’s systems earlier this year, but their demands go beyond monetary compensation. Known as BlackCat, the group claims responsibility for the phishing attack that occurred in February, as reported by Bleeping Computer. Researcher Dominic Alvieri shared a post where BlackCat asserts that they have stolen 80GB of data from Reddit and threatens to release it publicly unless their demands are met. The group is demanding a $4.5 million payout for the data, as well as a reversal of Reddit’s planned API pricing changes, which recently sparked protests from users and moderators.

During the time of the hack, Reddit revealed that hackers had utilized a sophisticated and targeted phishing attack to gain access to internal documents and data, including contact information for employees and advertisers. However, the company insisted that the hackers did not access any user data that was not already public. Reddit declined to comment on the hack. Bleeping Computer confirms that the BlackCat hack and the incident disclosed by Reddit in February are indeed the same.

BlackCat’s demands regarding API pricing changes stem from a contentious dispute between Reddit leadership and its active users. After Reddit announced its intentions to charge developers of third-party apps, potentially costing millions of dollars annually, many popular subreddits limited access, preventing new posts and public viewing. In an interview with The Verge, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated that the platform was not originally designed to support third-party apps and affirmed that the company will not backtrack on its proposed changes.
