Qualcomm Uncovers Snapdragon 855 Chipset With 5G, AI and 3D Fingerprint Scanner Support

Qualcomm uncovered the first ever next gen of mobile processor chips for powering 5G smartphones in the USA in the coming year. The Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform sets a precedent in 5G mobile platforms. Revealed at a tech summit in Hawaii, this upcoming 5G chip is more just an upgrade of the previous chip.

The major characteristic of Snapdragon 855 is the X50 modem for connecting mobile phones to 5G data networks wirelessly. It also boasts multi-gigabit data speed that will be a lot more than the present 4G networks.

This reveal did not come as a surprise as the company uncovered their flagship Snapdragon 845 chip last year at the very summit.

The new chip shall be developed by the 7-nanometre manufacturing process. Since the circuit has been cut down from 10nm to 7nm, it indicates that the chip will perform more efficiently with an extended battery life.

It seems as if Snapdragon 855 has been created to rival against the A12 Bionic chip by Apple. Qualcomm states that the new chip would be the first ever 5G mobile platform chip to be sold commercially. It will come with sub-6 GHz and mmWave antenna module along with RF front-end and RF transceiver. Bearing in mind that 5G shall at first be a limited and premium network, it seems justified for Qualcomm to release 5G support for the flagship chip.

According to the company, the flagship chip shall be featuring the 4th gen on-device Artificial Intelligence engine that will give around thrice the AI performance as compared to the previous chip. A three dimensional sonic sensor shall enable fingerprint scanning even when a number of impurities are present.

Speaking of optics, the flagship chip shall feature 4K High Definition Resolution video-making. More details regarding this one-of-a-kind chipset are expected to be released soon.
