Qualcomm today announced its new generation XR 2 Extended Reality Platform for the new generation smartphones. The new XR 2 platform from Qualcomm is described as the “world’s first 5G-supported extended reality (XR) platform.”

The market is full of AR and VR compatible devices and Qualcomm is offering XR 1 platform to the manufacturers of these devices. Many of the existing AR and VR devices are currently running on the Qualcomm’s XR 1 platform.

The XR 1 platform will still be there in the market which would be called as XR platform only and it will be powering the older generation devices. The XR 2 platform is designed for the “next-level features for never before experienced.”

What makes this XR 2 platform the most advanced platform is it supports 5G modem and comes with new AI capabilities. This new platform would support up to 7 cameras to experience the best of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality.

If we talk more about the compatibility of this new platform, then it would support display panels with a 3K by 3K resolution at 90 frames per second. And 8K 360-degree videos at 60 frames per second. With the use of custom silicon, it keeps the latency of the panels very low.

There are only a few manufacturers who are using these new technologies and AR compatible platforms for their AR compatible devices. The new XR 2 platform is coming up with a lot of upgrades and that’s what makes it the most advanced platform for the next generation AR and VR devices.

Apart from this, the new platform also comes with an improved Graphics engine that will give you a super realistic experience of exploring the virtual world.

Moving on to the audio side, the XR 2 Platform comes with a custom-built always-on, low-power Hexagon DSP that offer 3D spatial sound. It also comes with better voice activation feature.

It supports 5G and the company claims that the new generation XR 2 powered devices will be much more affordable. The support for 5G ensures better performance with low-latency experiences.

Unfortunately, there’s no timeline disclosed for the launch of this new platform by Qualcomm. We will learn more about it in the coming days.
