Producer Announces Start of Filming for ‘Mortal Kombat 2’

Over the years, there has been a plethora of exceptional video games that deserve on-screen adaptations. However, video game adaptations have historically been avoided due to their track record of disappointing box office results. That all changed recently with the success of HBO’s “The Last of Us” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” But before this era of successful video game adaptations, there was 2021’s “Mortal Kombat.”

Starring Lewis Tan as one of the main protagonists, the film successfully captured the essence of the game’s legacy. It was only a matter of time before a sequel was in the works, and reports of casting news kept fueling the anticipation. Now, producer Todd Garner has confirmed that filming for “Mortal Kombat 2” has officially begun. Garner made the announcement via Twitter, expressing that lessons were learned from the first film and a commitment was made to improve the viewing experience of the sequel. In his post, Garner states:

“Off we go! I’m thrilled to start, and trust me, we’ve listened. We’ve learned from the mistakes and are committed to making the best MK2 possible. I 100% support everyone’s right to their opinion, but I have the right not to be abused and will block you. So…let’s have an amazing ride!”

The “Mortal Kombat” films are based on the popular video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, boasting a dedicated fanbase. The original 1995 film adaptation of the games, surprisingly not R-rated despite its intense fight scenes, was a commercial success. However, its sequel, “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation,” did not live up to its predecessor commercially or critically. The 2021 remake, produced by Warner Bros., followed a similar pattern of commercial success with mixed reviews from critics. The hope is that “Mortal Kombat 2” will surpass the performance of the previous sequel.

Creative duties for the sequel will see the return of director Simon McQuoid, who made his feature directorial debut with the first film. Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter for “Moon Knight,” is set to write for the project. The cast members expected to reprise their roles in the sequel include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero (or his character’s undead counterpart, Noob Saibot). New cast members joining the adventure include Martyn Ford as the villainous Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and Damon Herriman as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi. “MORTAL KOMBAT!”

“Mortal Kombat 2” does not have a confirmed release date at this time.
