Potential Camera Upgrades in Pixel 8 Might Address My Key Concerns from Pixel 7

Google has earned a reputation for having the best camera phones, and the Pixel 7 Pro is a recent example of this. However, other flagship phones are quickly catching up, and even surpassing it in some areas. A leak from Android Authority has revealed the camera specs for the upcoming Pixel 8 series, suggesting that these new devices could address some of the complaints about the Pixel 7 Pro.

One of the main complaints about the Pixel 7 Pro is its performance in low-light conditions. The Galaxy S23 Ultra and vivo X90 Pro, in particular, are able to capture brighter shots with more detail and improved color reproduction. However, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro rumored to come with a 50MP Isocell GN2 main camera sensor, there is hope for improved low-light performance. A bigger sensor can result in a notable boost to brightness while reducing noise. It would also be great to see Google retain a more realistic Night Sight mode on the new phones.

Another complaint about the Pixel 7 Pro is its long exposure time in some low-light situations, especially in astrophotography mode. A larger main camera sensor can help reduce the maximum exposure time and improve the overall performance of low-light modes like Night Sight portraits. Additionally, a bigger sensor could enhance the ultrawide camera experience, providing better low-light performance and higher resolution images.

The Pixel 7 Pro’s autofocus capabilities are respectable in well-lit conditions but struggle in very low-light situations. This is an area where the Pixel 8 Pro is expected to see an improvement, thanks to its more advanced 3D ToF camera sensor. This upgraded sensor should enable more accurate autofocus capabilities and enhance other camera modes like Action Pan and portrait mode.

It’s clear that Google is focusing on hardware upgrades with the Pixel 8 series, which is a positive step forward. The challenge will be to fully utilize these upgrades to deliver meaningful improvements and catch up to competitors.
