Possible Health Impacts of Canadian Wildfire Smoke Spreading to the United States

The smoke from the raging wildfires in Central Canada has been causing a haze across much of the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic U.S. over the past few weeks. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the smoke reached the U.S. East Coast, leading to bad air quality and advisories affecting around 110 million people. The smoke has been causing an orange-tinged smog, shrouding New York City’s famous skyscrapers and prompting residents to wear face masks. The smoke can bring concerning health risks, as the toxins and particulate matter in wildfire smoke can irritate the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, leading to coughing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and heart attacks and strokes. New York City, for instance, has seen the amount of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) increase drastically, with the air hovering in the “Very Unhealthy” range on Wednesday. Even though smoke inhalation can add up over time, it is incredibly harmful even in little amounts, and people are advised to minimize their exposure by staying indoors and using air cleaning machines with HEPA filters.
