Possible Alternatives for SDCC 2023: SAG-AFTRA’s Potential Weapon in the Fight Against AMPTP

The Impact of SAG-AFTRA & WGA Strikes on SDCC: An Alternative Approach

When commencing an editorial with such a premise, considering the current heated environment, it is essential to address particular points. Firstly, when it comes to the WGA & SAG-AFTRA members striking against the AMPTP, it is clear to see who the “good guys” and “villains” are in this situation. The studios’ perspective can be summarized by their offer of a mere $100 in exchange for perpetual control of an individual’s likeness, which they consider a “good faith gesture.” Moreover, Disney CEO Bob Iger, with his recent contract extension and vast wealth, dismisses the negotiation points of the WGA & SAG-AFTRA as “unrealistic.” One could almost envision Iger twirling his mustache while tying union members to railroad tracks.

Secondly, this article is not intended as a critique of SAG-AFTRA’s management. Currently, public opinion heavily favors SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and Chief Negotiator & National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. Rather, this piece presents a “What If…?” scenario. If one combines their “inner geek” with an appreciation for the dramatic craft reminiscent of John Cusack’s earlier films, it becomes clear that San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2023 could have been an opportunity for SAG-AFTRA to make a significant impact on the AMPTP – on a grand stage.

Anticipating some skepticism, it must be acknowledged that SAG-AFTRA granted a negotiation extension until July 12th, and it seems that the AMPTP utilized this time primarily for last-minute PR maneuvers, promoting their short-term releases and solidifying their strike response plans. However, granting them until July 24th would not be based on the assumption that the studios would act in good faith. Instead, it would entail formulating a messaging strategy to permeate SDCC over its four-day duration. Every actor and writer involved in panels, presentations, screenings, or autograph signings would highlight how the studios are exploiting the individuals who create their shows. By ensuring that fans are informed early on and receive this message from respected voices, the blame would be unmistakably placed on the studios.

And if the studios and streamers resisted? Well, they could attempt to shut things down. However, imagine the repercussions of shutting down panels and presentations after just one day of SDCC. Such negative press would be incredibly damaging, particularly considering the passion of fandoms when their beloved shows and the people behind them are threatened. The studios would be left with the choice of enduring four days of scathing scrutiny from SAG-AFTRA & WGA or withdrawing and facing not only negative press (which they can manage) but also backlash against their projects.

Let’s not forget about activations! When considering New York City unions’ use of inflatable rats during labor disputes, one can envision SDCC activations that align with the event’s atmosphere while delivering a powerful message. To illustrate, we have drafted an idea based on the stories of underpaid individuals who create television shows that continue to resonate with audiences and generate revenue for streamers:

The Haunted House of Rotting Residuals: Participants enter a haunted maze clutching a $300 residual check – but can they navigate the horrors of The Tax Write-Off Terror, The Island of Lost Streaming Numbers, and The FAST Track to Hell? Here’s the twist: No matter which path or door they choose, the check’s value will never exceed 63 cents upon reaching the exit.
