Porsche has unveiled an exciting update to its iPhone app, providing users with a glimpse of what future CarPlay could offer. This update includes new buttons for controlling climate settings, interior lighting, and other features. To access these features, the My Porsche iOS app connects to the car by scanning a QR code found in the vehicle’s infotainment system, known as Porsche Communication Management (PCM). Once connected, third-party software in the infotainment system, such as Apple Music, can be linked with the iPhone.
Furthermore, for Porsche’s electric vehicles, the CarPlay interface will display the battery state of charge. This enhancement complements the recent Taycan software update that supports Apple Maps’ EV routing feature, providing a seamless experience for electric vehicle owners.
While CarPlay has yet to reach its full potential, Apple has plans to develop a version that can fully take over infotainment and cluster screens in vehicles. Currently, Apple Maps projection is only available in Polestar vehicles. On the other hand, brands like Polestar and Ford are opting for Google’s Android Automotive platform.
However, Porsche’s integration of CarPlay showcases a glimpse of what a comprehensive Apple in-car solution could look like. The ability to perform quick actions, such as warming up the car and adjusting sound profiles within the CarPlay interface, demonstrates Porsche’s willingness to embrace Apple’s solution. Porsche has previously shown enthusiasm for Apple’s software as an early adopter of CarPlay and by including Apple Podcasts as its native podcast app.
The new My Porsche app CarPlay experience is now accessible for owners of the new Porsche Cayenne and will be extended to other models in the future. However, vintage Boxster owners should not expect compatibility with this update.
