A significant earthquake rattled the southwestern part of the Philippines, located just southwest of the capital, without causing any notable damage or casualties.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 and occurred in the morning, with its epicenter near Hukay and a depth of approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles).
Although deep earthquakes are often widely felt, they have less potential to cause significant damage. Hukay is situated about 140 kilometers (87 miles) away from Manila.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of the Philippines reported no immediate major damages or injuries, but the assessment is still ongoing.
The Philippines frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which is a ring of seismic faults surrounding the ocean.
The eruption of Mayon Volcano, the country’s most active volcano, is currently ongoing. While it has been relatively mild so far, it has prompted approximately 18,000 individuals to evacuate from the northeastern Albay province.
