Our Disappointment Lingers as This Couple Fails to Last

The romantic relationships on Game of Thrones were often fraught with difficulties. Many of them were arranged marriages, like the union between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen, or they were doomed from the start, such as Robb Stark and Talisa. Even the earnest relationships, like Jon Snow and Ygritte’s, ended tragically. One such relationship that left fans feeling disappointed was the love affair between Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth.

Jaime Lannister, both in the books and the TV series, initially served as one of Game of Thrones’ main antagonists. In a shocking act, he pushes Bran Stark out of a window after the young boy witnesses Jaime and his sister Cersei engaging in an intimate act. However, war breaks out between House Lannister and House Stark when it is revealed that Jaime is the true father of Cersei’s children. During this conflict, Jaime is captured by Robb Stark’s forces.

Brienne of Tarth is introduced in the second season of the series. As a skilled warrior, she defies societal expectations and wins a sword tournament held in honor of Renly Baratheon. This earns her a place in Renly’s Kingsguard, but he is soon killed. Brienne is falsely blamed for his death and flees, pledging her allegiance to Catelyn Stark. During a mission, Catelyn instructs Brienne to bring Jaime back to King’s Landing for a prisoner exchange.

Despite initially despising each other, Jaime and Brienne develop a complex friendship during their journey. Jaime’s time with Brienne leads to his partial redemption and reveals a vulnerable side to Brienne. When the pair are captured, Jaime protects Brienne from harm. Later, he confides in her about his reasons for killing the Mad King.

Although Brienne successfully delivers Jaime to King’s Landing, the two continue to cross paths throughout the series. They reunite in the final season, with Jaime abandoning Cersei to fight alongside Daenerys and the Starks. Initially met with suspicion, Jaime earns trust through Brienne’s vouching. Prior to the final battle, Jaime knights Brienne, making her the first female knight in Westeros.

After surviving the battle, Jaime and Brienne enter a romantic relationship. Jaime plans to stay in Winterfell with Brienne, but his fear for Cersei’s life drives him back to King’s Landing. Brienne tries to stop him, assuring him of his goodness, but he denies it. Ultimately, Jaime and Cersei die together in the collapsed Red Keep.

The decision for Jaime to return to Cersei is heavily criticized, as it seems to contradict his character development. While it explores the themes of redemption and moral ambiguity in the series, it feels rushed and disappointing to fans who supported his relationship with Brienne. The series could have allowed Jaime and Brienne to stay together while still leaving doubt about his deserving happiness.
