Oscar Winner Ron Bartlett Discusses ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ in Exclusive Interview

Ron Bartlett, an acclaimed sound industry veteran and Academy Award winner for his work on “Dune,” has an extensive list of credits in the film industry. He has worked on iconic movies such as “Blade Runner,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Cabin in the Woods,” and many more. Bartlett recently served as the re-recording mixer for “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” the seventh installment in the franchise. With the film’s success at the box office, Bartlett spoke to We Got This Covered about his experience working on the movie.

When asked about why he chose to be a part of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” Bartlett explained that it was primarily about the people involved. He had worked with many of them before and enjoyed collaborating with them. His initial involvement with the film was unplanned but led to a positive experience that made him excited to continue working on the project.

In terms of the sound design for a Transformers movie, Bartlett acknowledged the challenge of meeting the expectations of both older and newer fans. He mentioned that the robot voices required processing, and he followed the established template for previous films while also adding his own touch to newer characters. Maintaining the unique sound of iconic characters like Optimus Prime was crucial.

Regarding the post-production process, Bartlett mentioned the difficulties of working on scenes that were not fully finished. In a film like “Transformers,” where there are extensive visual effects and frequent changes to dialogue, he had to adapt and make adjustments along the way. It was important for him to be open to the director’s vision while staying true to the overall franchise.

In action sequences with multiple elements, such as characters, dialogue, background noise, and explosions, Bartlett emphasized the challenge of finding balance. With a complex and dense audio track, his goal was to prioritize the story and ensure important elements came through clearly. He mentioned the concept of “rack focus” in sound, where the key story points take center stage while other elements blend and move around them.

Overall, Bartlett expressed his enjoyment and the challenges of working on “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” highlighting the collaborative nature of the project and the need to adapt to the unique demands of each film.
