Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the development of the nuclear bomb. While Oppenheimer raised the question of forgiveness for a man who helped to create atomic bombs, Nolan has turned to a more modern question of technological innovation. Well, I think that’s all a bit too speculative at the moment. I think it’s part of the problem. Part of the problems with the labor negotiations this summer is it’s difficult to look forward in the future. And I think to a degree, one of the interesting things about Oppenheimer’s story as it applies to the nuclear threat was it wasn’t that these brilliant minds couldn’t foresee that there would be consequences. It’s just that they had no choice or they felt they had no choice.

And so that makes it an interesting dilemma, I think as far as new technology of all kinds goes, AI being an obvious example of something we’re looking at right now. To a certain extent, it’s very difficult to look at all of the possibilities and plan according to that. It’s really a question of, to a certain extent, some of these things have to start to happen to know how to respond.

But I’m an optimist, and certainly in the film business, there’s a particular tension between people not wanting these technologies to exploit people, but also people want the freedom to be able to try to create with these tools. And I think part of the problem with the whole issue is that AI is perhaps too general for all of the different technical innovations that come under that umbrella, but certainly we’ll once again see a transformative technology incorporated into our industry.

Nolan’s Take On The Influence Of AI On Hollywood

Nolan’s nuanced take on AI is heavily influenced by the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The strikes lasted for months and involved major concerns about AI. Writers worried that writers’ rooms would be overtaken by AI, and SAG-AFTRA feared that background actors could face a similar fate. With ever-ballooning budgets, it appeared that studios could cut back on payments to actors and writers by using AI to replace them.

The guilds did not completely prevent the use of AI in Hollywood, as neither negotiation secured an agreement to ban the technology.

Once AI has developed further, he foresees a chance to develop a specialized tool to be used by those within the film industry. Without restricting access to jobs, this new AI can function in the same way that CGI has. It can become a transformative tool that only makes movies better and careers in Hollywood more accessible. Still, just as Oppenheimer struggles with new technologies, Nolan expects Hollywood to as well.
