Did you know that in literature, strawberries often symbolize humility, modesty, and shyness? The theory suggests that because strawberries grow under the shade of their own leaves, they have a limited perspective of their own significance and are content with their place in the world.

In Celeste, strawberries have become iconic. These pixel art fruits have come to represent the game, and in fan communities worldwide, the humble strawberry is immediately associated with Celeste. Why? Well, the game is filled with collectible strawberries scattered throughout its levels. While collecting them serves no purpose, they provide an extra challenge, contribute to building the game’s world, and offer a sweet treat for the protagonist, Madeline. Additionally, if you manage to collect all 175 strawberries, you’ll receive a small bonus in the epilogue.

It’s intriguing that a symbol of humility and self-worth takes center stage in Celeste. This streamlined platformer, with its lean and athletic style, is relentless in its pursuit of pixel-platform perfection. Celeste is a challenging game that embodies personal growth through the metaphor of climbing a mountain. It revels in pushing you to fail, urging you to stumble over the finish line, and barely scrape by to achieve your goals each day.

Madeline’s abilities in the game are seemingly simple: running, jumping, dashing, and wall climbing. Yet, the way these nimble tools are realized in her world is truly sublime. The journey you embark on with Madeline, as you learn to navigate obstacles and reach the mountain’s summit, is deeply impactful. Just like its mechanics, Celeste achieves a lot with very little. By blending trial-and-error gameplay with a narrative about anxiety and depression, Celeste creates a harmonious connection between its mechanics and story—a lesson that even the industry’s triple-A giants could learn from.

Essentially, Celeste encourages embracing the things that bring you down, accepting your flaws, and allowing your emotions to exist. It teaches you that it’s possible to hold both success and failure simultaneously. Sometimes, this is even celebrated by the strawberries appearing in seemingly impossible corners of the stages. While you may not be able to reach them, completing the level is still an accomplishment. Remember, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Today, Celeste makes its return to the Xbox Game Pass service. Even if you’re not typically a fan of challenging 2D platformers, trying out this game won’t hurt. You may discover your next favorite modern indie game, just like I did the last time I had the opportunity to experience this beautiful gem on the service.
