Nintendo Has Already Embarked on Other Visual Content Expansion Projects

Looks like we’re getting more movies and other forms of visual entertainment for Nintendo IPs.

In Nintendo’s latest Corporate Management Policy Briefing for the fiscal year ending March 2021, some details have come to light, sort of, in regards to how the company plans to expand its numerous IPs into different areas, Earlier this year, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke in a Famitsu interview about expanding the Nintendo characters to different settings outside of games.

Starting on page 20 of the PDF available here from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, it touches on expanding the number of people who have access to the Nintendo IP through pushing the characters into mobile applications, merchandise, the upcoming theme park, and through visual content, specifically the collaboration with Illumination that is working on an animated Mario movie. The expansions are all detailed to be driving audience interest to the Nintendo Switch console through association.

Flick to page 29 and it’s detailed that Nintendo plans to introduce other visual content expansions from 2022 onwards. “We have also already embarked on multiple other visual content expansion projects, and are pursuing further opportunities.” The Super Mario animated movie is brought up again, but “Going forward, visual content expansion initiatives may not be limited to film.” Indicating that Nintendo could perhaps be moving into cartoons, TV series’, heck, maybe even music videos.

Nintendo states that it will continue to invest in these visual expansions in hopes of increasing the number of people who have access to the IP. The document continues, “we will always expand our properties in ways that fit the individual appeal of each character, taking great care not to damage the image of attachment consumers have for them.” so basically, don’t expect a gory Legend of Zelda TV series or something I imagine?

I’m certainly excited to see what visual entertainment Nintendo has in store for us and hope to see more collaborations with other studios for either movies or online shows. It’ll also be interesting to see if Nintendo puts out a media streaming service on the Switch for its IPs. Of course, this is just me speculating and getting a bit too excited for a possible movie about Bowser’s origins.
