Niantic’s Monster Hunter Now will launch on mobile on September 14

Niantic has officially announced the release date for their upcoming game, “Monster Hunter Now.” The game is set to launch on September 14th for both Android and iOS devices.

The release date was confirmed during a developer presentation after Niantic had previously hinted at a September release window.

“Monster Hunter Now” is a mobile game that draws inspiration from Capcom’s popular action-RPG franchise, “Monster Hunter,” while incorporating the gameplay mechanics of “Pokémon Go.” Players will be able to explore the real world to encounter various monsters and events on their in-game map.

Unlike “Pokémon Go,” combat in “Monster Hunter Now” is more dynamic and fast-paced, similar to the mainline games of the “Monster Hunter” series. Players can execute combos and dodge attacks by tapping the screen. The game offers a wide range of weapons, including swords, hammers, bows, and light bowguns. Players can also customize their hunters and upgrade their gearsets. Confirmed monsters from the “Monster Hunter” series include Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku, Pukei-Pukei, Rathalos, and Diablos.

Considering the popularity of the “Monster Hunter” franchise, adapting it to the gameplay style of “Pokémon Go” presents a significant opportunity for Niantic. With over 90 million copies sold worldwide, the “Monster Hunter” series is second only to “Resident Evil” in terms of Capcom’s biggest franchises.

However, Niantic has faced challenges recently. The company had to lay off numerous employees and cancel games like “NBA All-World” and “Marvel World of Heroes.” Niantic attributed this to a decline in revenue after initially experiencing high demand during the early stages of the pandemic. Even “Pokémon Go” experienced a 50 percent drop in revenue last year, reflecting a 20 percent decline in the overall mobile AR game market.

Niantic has clarified that “Pokémon Go” will remain its top priority, but it also plans to support “Monster Hunter Now” and other games like “Pikmin Bloom” and the recently released “Peridot.”

I had the opportunity to play “Monster Hunter Now” at Summer Game Fest last month and was impressed with how Niantic successfully translated the “Monster Hunter” experience to mobile. You can read my full preview here.
