Joel Coen took advantage of his time as an individual filmmaker to direct the powerful Shakespeare adaptation, “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, starring Denzel Washington in the titular role. The movie, which was presented in black-and-white, delves into the depths of King of Scotland’s mind as he grapples with a prophecy that foretells the loss of his crown at the hands of Banquo’s descendants. As time passes, Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand) watches her husband spiral into madness, using his power for violence in a desperate attempt to retain his throne.

Meanwhile, Ethan Coen remained occupied with his latest project, “Drive-Away Dolls”, released this year. The comedy, starring Maragaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, takes unexpected and unconventional twists as a couple of friends seek solace after a series of unfortunate events. Sometimes, the best remedy for a breakup is to partner with inexperienced criminals, or at least that’s the solution Jamie (Qualley) and Marian (Visnawathan) stumble upon in this explosively comedic road adventure set in the fall.

The Boys Are Back

In a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Ethan Cohen discussed his experience working on “Drive-Away Dolls” without his brother. The film was made during their time apart. Here’s what he had to say about the situation: “Oh, well, I don’t have to worry about distinguishing it, you do! I don’t worry about that stuff. I mean, Trish (Cooke) and I work on the movie—I don’t even know what to say; it’s actually a valid question, but it completely stumps me. We work on the movie, and that’s what it is. [Laughs] It reflects our taste, as opposed to mine and Joel’s taste, so it’s a different thing, but that’s what it is.”
