Netflix’s New Franchise Fad Sparks Debate over its Mediocre Performance

Against all odds, Netflix is determined to expand its in-house franchises and create new ones. However, the success of its latest plan to create a worldwide intellectual property (IP) is far from guaranteed.

While star-studded blockbusters like Extraction, The Gray Man, Red Notice, and The Old Guard have sequels in the pipeline, their success was already assured due to the big names attached, large budgets, and mass-market appeal to subscribers worldwide.

On the other hand, localized spin-offs and offshoots present a different challenge, and it remains uncertain whether they can thrive in the long run. For instance, Army of Thieves, although a solid crime caper set in Europe, was expected to be the first of many standalone stories in Zack Snyder’s zombie universe. However, no further stories have materialized, and the animated companion series remains stuck in development limbo.

Similarly, the Korean remake of Money Heist in the Joint Economic Area proved to be an unnecessary endeavor as it failed to make a significant impact on the global most-watched charts. Additionally, Bird Box Barcelona received a lukewarm 49 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite its guaranteed success in the rankings.

Teresa Moreno, Head of European film output, believes that “Netflix can offer a nuanced way of adapting titles across formats and languages.” However, the confidence booster lies in having a strong and successful worldwide IP to anchor subsequent chapters globally, as stated by Bird Box producer Chris Morgan in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the quality will match the quantity.
