Netflix Takes Advantage of the Opportunity to Bring ‘Titanic’ Back to the Streamer

If you’re one of the millions who have been bombarded with news about the recent Titan Submersible disaster, from various sources like the news, social media, and even TikTok, and found yourself wondering about the whereabouts of Jack and Rose, then you’re in for a treat.

This week, Netflix is making a smart yet controversial move by reintroducing the beloved 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic by James Cameron to its streaming platform. Starting July 1, viewers in the United States and Canada will have the chance to relive the iconic love story portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

The announcement has gained significant attention, especially considering the recent tragic incident involving the Titan submersible that captured global headlines. Four passengers and the sub’s pilot sadly lost their lives. Additionally, Netflix has released a captivating trailer for a documentary titled The Deepest Breath, which explores the world of freediving.

Angry Keyboard Bashing

Social media users expressed their discontent over the timing of Titanic’s return to Netflix. One user criticized, “The timing is highly inappropriate,” while another commented, “Netflix seems insensitive in their decision-making process.” Another user expressed their disappointment, “Netflix has crossed the line of decency with this timing,” and a fourth user stated, “Exploiting a tragic accident for the sake of gaining viewers is distasteful.” Yet another user criticized Netflix, saying, “Netflix’s marketing director must have thought, ‘Let’s profit from the tragedy of those people’s deaths.’ How distorted and sick does one’s mindset have to be to entertain such thoughts?”

However, it’s important to note that Titanic was already scheduled to return to Netflix, as it had recently been available on Prime Video in the U.S. This decision was made prior to the tragedy, and it’s crucial to understand that Netflix did not intentionally capitalize on the timing of the incident.

Sinking Feeling

During an interview with BBC News, James Cameron shared his deep intuition about the fate of the sub soon after its disappearance was reported. He said:

“I had an instinctual feeling about what had transpired. The failure of the sub’s electronics, communication system, and tracking transponder all at once meant one thing: the sub was lost. I knew it was resting precisely at its last recorded depth and location, and that’s precisely where it was eventually discovered. It felt like an agonizing and surreal ordeal, with discussions of noises, oxygen levels, and various other details adding to the nightmarish atmosphere.”

Regarding the documentary, Netflix initially released the trailer for The Deepest Breath before the tragic outcome of the missing submersible was revealed. It’s important to note that the documentary does not focus on the Titanic or submersibles. Instead, it offers an exploration of the remarkable journey of Alessia Zecchini, the current record holder in freediving.
