Netflix Charts Suddenly Infiltrated by Terrible ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Adaptation

Gone are the days when video game movies were considered failures. They made valiant attempts to capture the essence of the games, but ultimately missed the mark. In this era of successful video game adaptations, it seems that people either overlook the early struggles or appreciate them ironically. This phenomenon is evident in the latest Netflix Top 10 list.

Surprisingly, the 2016 film Assassin’s Creed has secured a spot on Netflix’s esteemed Top 10 Global charts, ranking as the 5th most-watched film for the week of June 12 – 18. It accumulated an impressive 5.4 million hours of views. Coincidentally, it shares this position with The Mother, a 2023 film starring Jennifer Lopez, which also happens to revolve around assassins.

Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, The Mother managed to appease audiences with an average score of 63 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, Assassin’s Creed received a disappointing 42 percent. Perhaps viewers were drawn to these films out of curiosity about their similarities, or maybe they simply craved the allure of campy and poorly made video game adaptations, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the release of The Last of Us: Season 2 amid the Writers’ Strike, and the undecided fate of The Legend of Zelda movie.

Assassin’s Creed is a science-fiction action film set in a dystopian world, featuring talented actors such as Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons. The movie attempts to capture the essence of the game franchise through its portrayal of technology being used to relive the life of an assassin in order to locate the Apple of Eden. While the film includes numerous references to the original games, it unfortunately falls short in terms of box office success, earning only $10 million during its domestic opening and $240 million worldwide.

If you’re still interested in watching this film adaptation of the popular video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
