The Mission: Impossible franchise is renowned for its groundbreaking action sequences, but even director Christopher McQuarrie draws inspiration from other sources. McQuarrie, known for his work on films like Edge of Tomorrow and The Usual Suspects, discussed his influences and how they can be seen in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
During the interview, McQuarrie mentioned that Dead Reckoning draws inspiration from numerous movies while also being unique. He stated that he takes elements from films he admires and puts his own spin on them. While he didn’t specify all his influences, he did highlight some titles:
“There are films I am inspired by, competing with, in a sportsman-like way, kind of friendly. There are films that I deeply, deeply admire and kind of get stuck in my head. I love movies about the Arctic, I love movies about submarines. Submarines are just cool. The Arctic is just cool. I love ‘The Thing,’ but I can’t really say that ‘The Thing’ is an influence on ‘Dead Reckoning.’ I love ‘Das Boot’ and ‘Crimson Tide,’ submarines are an amazing high-pressure environment, I can’t really say that they’re influences on the movie. They’re gauntlets. It’s a filmmaker showing me some cool environment and me going, ‘I want to do that! I want my opportunity to play in that space.’”
McQuarrie also discussed how he approaches references in the Mission: Impossible movies. Unlike Rogue Nation, which included deliberate references to The Parallax View and Three Days of the Condor, he decided not to include obvious references in Dead Reckoning because he knows fans will be searching for them anyway. He used the example of a yellow Fiat 500 in the film, which some mistakenly believed was a reference to Lupin the Third. However, McQuarrie clarified that the Fiat is yellow simply because it’s a distinct and fun color, and he wasn’t aware of the reference to the animated series.
To his surprise, McQuarrie often discovers echoes of films he admires in his own movies. He mentioned seeing influences from John Ford and Steven Spielberg, particularly referencing a scene reminiscent of “Close Encounters.” These inspirations naturally find their way into the grand scale of the Mission: Impossible movies.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One follows Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) as he races against time to locate a dangerous weapon that threatens humanity. Returning cast members include Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Henry Czerny. The film also features Pom Klementieff
