The Summer Game Fest showcase unveiled something big – gameplay footage from Mortal Kombat 1. The 12th mainline game starts afresh by resetting the entire universe and introducing Liu Kang, once mortal, as a god of fire who has predominantly resealed the realm.
Popular characters including Sub Zero and Scorpion are back, but this time, they are brought as siblings by the development team, who decided to give the characters an innovative makeover in this 2023 reboot. Apart from imbuing these new characters with dynamic roles, MK1 also introduces Kameos, a new feature that provides versatility and flexibility to fights. Kameo functionality allows you to summon a guest fighter to back you up with just one button, allowing you to combine different moves using back and forward inputs. Kameos also come with Kameo throws and fatalities, adding more excitement to the game from start to finish.
We got the chance to try out different characters while experimenting with different Kameos and their fatalities. As a long-time fan of MK, Engadget’s reviewer notes that the game delivers and thrashes its opponents simultaneously. Mortal Kombat 1 is set to launch on September 19th, 2023, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.
