Miranda’s Exploration of Sexuality Deserves Better Than ‘And Just Like That’

“And Just Like That…,” the sequel series to the iconic ’90s show “Sex and the City,” brings back the beloved characters as they navigate their 50s in all their glory. This series continues to prioritize women and create an empowering environment, with improved representation and a more sensitive approach to sexuality and orientation. One notable storyline is Miranda’s discovery of her sexual orientation and her relationship with Che Diaz. However, while this development is important, the show fails to do it justice.

In the first season, Che, a non-binary, queer stand-up comedian and co-host of Carrie’s podcast, forms a close friendship with Miranda. Their relationship takes a romantic turn, sparking discourse among Miranda’s friends due to her ongoing marriage to Steve. While the romance itself is sweet and compelling, the show mishandles it, leaving a negative impression for those seeking quality LGBTQ+ representation.

The show repeats an old storyline of Miranda’s troubled relationship with Steve, making her actions feel out of character and overshadowing the empowerment of her new relationship. Miranda’s treatment of her friends also deviates from her loyal nature, as she keeps her relationship with Che a secret. Additionally, the show rushes the intimate moments between Miranda and Che, failing to give their relationship the proper build-up it deserves.

In the second season, however, the relationship between Che and Miranda becomes more established. They live together in LA and are open about their love. The focus shifts from solely physical intimacy to a deeper emotional connection, showing growth and potential for further development.

Overall, “And Just Like That…” fumbles in its portrayal of Miranda’s sexuality. Despite its attempts at progressiveness, poor writing hampers the impact of this significant storyline. However, the second season seems to be addressing these issues and offering hope for a more authentic representation of Che and Miranda’s relationship.
