Microsoft predicts that 10 million copies of Starfield and Indiana Jones would be sold on PlayStation

The Exclusivity of Starfield and Indiana Jones on Xbox: A Calculated Move

Excitement and disappointment fill the air as Microsoft announces that both Starfield and Indiana Jones will be exclusive to Xbox. PlayStation owners are left frustrated with the knowledge that they won’t have the chance to play these highly anticipated games. However, Microsoft has foreseen this backlash and is confident that exclusivity won’t hinder their sales.

Insights from court documents shared by games journalist Stephen Totilo shed light on Microsoft’s perspective. According to Tim Stuart, the chief financial officer of Microsoft, the company had projected 10 million sales on PlayStation for both Starfield and Indiana Jones before opting for exclusivity. They weighed the options and decided that they could recoup any potential losses through Game Pass subscriptions and increased Xbox sales.

Microsoft’s optimism is not unfounded. In fact, they firmly believe that if Starfield and Indiana Jones were released on PlayStation, the games would sell more than 10 million units. Stuart confirmed during his testimony that the company had thoroughly evaluated the exclusivity of ZeniMax’s games (the parent company of Bethesda) back in December 2020.

Game Pass as the Saving Grace

Although losing the potential sales of 10 million units may initially sound concerning, Microsoft is confident that Game Pass will make up for this loss. By offering Starfield and Indiana Jones on their cloud gaming service, they hope to compensate for the absence on PlayStation.

In the bigger picture, neither Stuart nor Microsoft seem worried about missing out on millions of PlayStation sales. The excitement and anticipation surrounding Bethesda’s upcoming sci-fi RPG, Starfield, guarantees a significant profit regardless.

Starfield is set to release on September 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. If you’re looking for something to keep you occupied until then, we recommend diving into this 1,000-page compendium.
