According to reports, OpenAI, which is the parent company for ChatGPT and GPT-4, warned Microsoft to go slow in integrating large language models (LLMs) into Bing search to avoid inaccurate and unpredictable responses. OpenAI was concerned about Microsoft integrating an unreleased version of GPT-4 too early. However, Microsoft allegedly ignored OpenAI’s warning. After launching the revamped Bing search, many people shared screenshots of Bing Chat doing bizarre things such as gaslighting people, lying, and sulking. Microsoft had to limit the length of conversations people could have with Bing Chat to avoid the LLM going haywire. Since then, Microsoft has eased restrictions as updates have reduced the frequency of crazy responses.
Despite being in a partnership, ongoing tensions may exist between OpenAI and Microsoft since they offer competing products. For example, the Wall Street Journal report details how Microsoft executives were anxious about the launch of ChatGPT since they were already integrating LLMs into Bing. Nonetheless, Microsoft licenses OpenAI’s models and technology for use in products such as Azure, Office, Bing, Windows, and more. Microsoft invested around $10 billion USD ($13.3 billion CAD) in OpenAI, which also serves as the company’s exclusive cloud partner.
In a recent interview featured on Wired, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged the companies’ competition stating “I felt OpenAI was going after the same thing as us. So instead of trying to train five different foundational models, I wanted one foundation, making it the basis for a platform effect. So we partnered. They bet on us, we bet on them.” During the interview, Nadella also avoided questions about whether Microsoft intended to acquire OpenAI.
