MediaTek announces gaming-focused Helio G90 mobile chips


Taiwanese chip manufacturer MediaTek has announced its latest flagship processors, the Helio G90 and G90T. These chips are specially designed for gaming smartphones that need high performance and capabilities. Eventually, this is the first gaming-centric SoC from the company’s G-Series lineup. They include a new “HyperEngine” technology, which consists of several features that are designed to boost the performance of smartphone games. 

The new G90 and G90T chips include an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.05GHz, which uses the same ARM Cortex-A76 and A55 cores that most of the flagship phones are using currently. In addition, the chipmaker will also include a Mali G76 GPU with speeds of up to 800MHz and support for up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

This chip is also said to support HDR10 tech and will be coming with an intelligent network prediction engine that is able to sense when Wi-Fi quality is degrading and automatically use an LTE connection as a backup for non-stop network connection. The chips also include a “rapid response engine” to make touchscreen controls feel more responsive.

With these G90 series chips, MediaTek is planning to target the gaming market to power the gaming-focused smartphones. However, it will be harder for the company to survive in the competition where its rival, Qualcomm has already set its base in powering the gaming-focused smartphones. While MediaTek has always been known in powering the mid-range devices, not a flagship one. So, it might be challenging for the company to set itself in the gaming market.
