The Big Picture
- Mattel is excited about creating a sequel to the successful first Barbie film.
- The CEO of Mattel explains that there are many opportunities to explore in future Barbie films due to the brand’s various iterations.
- Rather than rushing to release the second movie, the focus is on ensuring the first film’s success and establishing it as a lucrative franchise.
It seems that audiences will be returning to Barbie Land, as Warner Bros is currently in the early stages of developing a sequel to the first Barbie film. Following the tremendous success of Greta Gerwig’s movie at the box office, it was only a matter of time before the studio decided to continue the narrative introduced by Margot Robbie’s unforgettable portrayal of the iconic character. The sequel presents an opportunity to further explore the themes and ideas that made the first film special while telling a different story from the one where Stereotypical Barbie defied expectations to forge her own path. In a recent interview with Variety, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz discussed the studio’s approach to upcoming films:
“Barbie, as a brand, has numerous iterations. The Barbie franchise is incredibly vast, encompassing not only the iconic figure but also her family and the many elements within her universe. It’s an expansive and flexible brand, offering countless opportunities.”
Kreiz emphasized that there is no rush to release the second Barbie film on the big screen. The studio’s priority is to ensure that the first movie is a success and creates the foundation for a thriving franchise. He stated, “At the moment, we’re not immediately jumping into planning the second and third movies. We want to focus on getting the first one right and establishing it as a successful representation of the franchise on the big screen. Once we accomplish that, the doors will open quickly to further opportunities.”
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will reprise their roles as Barbie and Ken in the sequel. The first film explored their differences and showcased the importance of collaboration and unity. However, no official confirmation regarding their return has been announced by the studio. Barbie’s initial belief that Barbies should rule every aspect of Barbie Land and Ken’s realization that a harmonious society requires cooperation set the stage for potential developments in the upcoming film.
Infinite Potential in Barbie Land
The first film introduced various versions of Barbie who could take center stage in the upcoming sequel. Emma Mackey portrayed a Barbie character focused on physics research, while Issa Rae played the President of Barbie Land. The direction of the second movie remains unknown, but if the first installment is any indication, viewers can expect more parties, societal problem-solving, and moments of existential contemplation from the Barbies. Musical numbers, extravagant outfits, and existential dread will once again captivate audiences.
