Government offices, schools, and businesses across eastern North Carolina and on the Outer Banks were affected by an internet outage for Brightspeed and Lumen customers that lasted for more than four hours on Friday.
“While doing a routine infrastructure update, we experienced an outage that impacted the eastern part of North Carolina,” according to a statement from Brightspeed.
The outages first started cropping up around 10:15 a.m. and were impacting DSL and fiber services on both residential and commercial accounts.
Locally on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, Verizon and Brightspeed users were reportedly affected by the outage throughout the day.
Most residential customers appear to have only experienced a short-term outage, while businesses were down until at least around 2 p.m.
The statewide outage reports included multiple 911 centers from Currituck to Greenville being impacted, school and local government phone systems being offline, and pharmacies unable to process prescriptions due to the loss of internet service.
“We identified the issue immediately and dispatched crews to resolve it,” according to a statement by Brightspeed. “We restored service and all customers are back online.”
