Marvel’s Most Concerning Upcoming Movie: A Forgettable Phase 5 Entry Lost in the Winter Abyss

In Marvel’s Phase Five, one particular movie is facing a significant challenge compared to the rest — Thunderbolts. Despite the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes causing delays in the entire slate, the struggles of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have made it the most notorious project. However, Thunderbolts has an even tougher climb ahead for several reasons.

Fans had long been demanding a Thunderbolts movie as a counterpart to DC’s Suicide Squad films. The concept of a team of MCU villains redeeming themselves sounded intriguing. However, the announcement of the movie failed to generate the expected excitement. This may be due to the chosen roster, led by Sebastian Stan’s Bucky and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.

The characters themselves have individual popularity, but together they become somewhat repetitive, all variations of the super-soldier concept. With Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and U.S. Agent, only Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost brings something different, and there are rumors of her reduced role. Additionally, having half the group from the not-so-beloved Black Widow film in Phase Four might not have been the best idea.

Furthermore, the ties between Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World seem exciting with Harrison Ford reprising his role as Thaddeus Ross. However, Anthony Mackie has suggested that Stan’s commitments to Thunderbolts could limit his involvement in Cap 4. While Bucky and Yelena may be a fun duo, they can’t replace Sam and Bucky in fans’ hearts.

However, the biggest reason for concern is the impact of the ongoing strikes on Thunderbolts. The movie hasn’t even started production yet. Its shoot was supposed to begin this summer, but that plan has been thwarted. According to scooper Charles Murphy, filming will likely not begin until January 2024, which means its scheduled December 20, 2024 release date is in jeopardy.

Thunderbolts was initially set to be Marvel’s big summer 2024 tentpole, but it’s fortunate that Captain America: Brave New World has taken that position with its smoother production and higher level of anticipation. While Thunderbolts still has a chance to rally, it currently seems like it might end up feeling like Black Widow 2, which is not highly anticipated among Marvel sequels.

The title implies that Thunderbolts should be a powerful presence in the MCU, but currently, it’s causing only a faint crackle.
