DC Comics has recently enhanced the DC Infinite app to provide an authentic Japanese reading experience for the Kodansha Superman and Batman manga, with a right-to-left format.
Earlier this year, DC announced a partnership with Japanese publisher Kodansha to release English-language collected editions of three popular manga titles featuring DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains: Joker: One Operation Joker, Superman vs. Meshi, and Batman: Justice Buster. These titles were scheduled to be published in print, preserving the Japanese right-to-left reading style. Additionally, they were made available to all paid subscribers of the DC Universe Infinite (DCUI) digital subscription platform as weekly chapters, with an excerpt from the corresponding print chapter accompanying each DCUI release.
However, when reading online using the DC app, the reading experience followed the left-to-right format typical in the Western tradition. To address this, DC Comics has now updated the app to feature a new reader that enables readers to enjoy these chapters in the traditional manga style, from right to left.
“We aim to provide all readers with the opportunity to experience DC’s new manga titles in their authentic format. Therefore, we have upgraded DCUI with a new reader that allows our valued subscribers to enjoy these books in the traditional manga style,” expressed Anne DePies, SVP and DC general manager. “The digital chapters will be read from right to left, mirroring the experience of the physical collections that will be published later this year. We are grateful to the DCUI team and our partnership with Kodansha for their support in bringing these books to the North American market.”
This new feature and content will be accessible to all paid DCUI subscribers immediately, irrespective of their subscription tier. In addition to the Kodansha titles, several existing manga titles available on DCUI will also be adapted for compatibility with the new reader. This includes all three volumes of Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga, Batman and the Justice League, and the complete Batman: Death Mask.
The first volumes of Joker: One Operation Joker, Superman vs. Meshi, and Batman: Justice Buster will be published on September 5th.
