Safari may not be the most exciting aspect of macOS, but Apple is not neglecting its web browser. The latest version comes with a variety of useful upgrades, such as better privacy controls, encryption features, and the ability to create “apps” from any web page.
One notable feature is the new web apps. This feature places a website in your dock, just like any other app, and opens it with a minimal interface that helps conceal the fact that you’re using a browser to access a webpage. This is similar to the shortcuts in Google’s Chrome, which can also place a link with a favicon in your dock and open the site in a simple frame without any of the typical browser controls. This helps blur the line between desktop and web apps, which was part of Chrome’s entire appeal, especially as it evolved into Chrome OS.
However, the most significant improvements to Safari are related to privacy and profiles. Private browsing now blocks more trackers and your fingerprints from sites so they can’t identify you. You can also secure private browsing sessions with your fingerprint, allowing you to step away from your computer without worrying that someone might sneak a peek while you’re shopping for a gift or having to close your session.
Profiles also allow you to separate your browsing by topic or context. For instance, you can keep all of your work tabs in a separate Safari window with its own cookies, extensions, and favourites. Then you can easily switch to your personal profile to resume trolling eBay for deals on vintage cameras.
Finally, users will be able to share passwords or groups of passwords through iCloud Keychain with end-to-end encryption. The latest version of Safari will be available later this year as part of macOS Sonoma, which will be launched in beta next month.
