Microsoft has announced the enabling of file sharing in its Android feature for Windows 11 with the release of an update to the Windows Subsystem for Android. Available for testing by all Windows Insiders, the update includes drag and drop support, camera improvements, bug fixes and file sharing. The Windows Subsystem for Android team explained in a blog post that they were responding to the requests of the community, and the latest update allows users to share Windows user folders such as documents and pictures with the subsystem. This means that users can seamlessly upload a photo to a social media app or edit a video in a creative app without any disruption.
Folder sharing is enabled by default for preview users and Android apps can only access or edit Windows files with user-permission. Permission requests will be shown on the app and the permission can be revoked at any time from settings. In order to prevent malicious apps from being loaded, Microsoft scans all Android apps during install with Microsoft Defender or other antivirus software. However, Microsoft has limited file sharing support to just Windows user profile folders, including typical documents, photos, and videos folders. Windows system folders, folders with external drives or folders like Program Files will not be supported for file sharing. Furthermore, certain file types like .exe are also blocked from file sharing.
Given that Microsoft has unveiled this feature to all Windows Insider channels, file sharing support will likely be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the upcoming weeks, although Microsoft is unlikely to release such updates to the Release Preview channel until they are release ready.
