Apple recently introduced a fascinating feature in iOS 17 – the Live Voicemail. It displays a transcribed version of incoming voicemails on the iPhone screen so that the user can decide whether to take the call or not. As per MobileSyrup, this feature won’t require carriers and is unlikely to become a paid add-on. Unlike visual voicemail, which requires extra payment, users can use Live Voicemail without any additional cost.
The carrier-agnostic nature of Live Voicemail comes from how it works – Apple intercepts the call and displays the transcription before it gets to the carrier’s voicemail service. Notably, recipients can step in and answer the call after seeing the transcription, and if no one answers, the voicemail is passed onto the carrier. It is still unknown whether this process happens directly on the iPhone.
Live Voicemail bears some resemblance to Google’s Call Screen feature for Pixels, but there are some differences. Call Screen works during live calls, and users can activate it to view a live transcript on their phone, select different automated responses, and end or answer the call. Call Screen automatically intercepts some calls, like suspected spam, in the US. However, Live Voicemail occurs when users don’t answer a call. For callers, the experience is like leaving a normal voicemail. Recipients can still join the call if it’s essential. Overall, Live Voicemail could be a smoother experience for both parties, but its comparison with Call Screen remains to be tested.
