LoveFrom, the renowned design firm founded by Jony Ive, Apple’s former design head, has joined forces with British audio brand Linn to create a special 50th anniversary edition of the Sondek LP12 turntable. This limited edition turntable, known as the Linn Sondek LP12-50, will only have 250 units produced and delivered from August 2023 to March 2024. It is currently available for reservation at a whopping price of $60,000 (£50,000).
The collaboration between LoveFrom and Linn began in early 2022 when Linn CEO Gilad Tiefenbrun unexpectedly received an invitation to meet with Jony Ive via LinkedIn. After discussions, the two companies agreed to work together on this upcoming turntable, which has been described by Fast Company as Ive’s “first hardware project post-Apple.”
Linn’s focus in the development of the Sondek LP12-50 has been on improving its sonic elements. This includes the creation of a “Bedrok” plinth, made from dense wood, designed to minimize vibrations. On the other hand, LoveFrom has contributed to the industrial design aspects of the turntable. They have made subtle improvements to the current design, such as smoothening edges, replacing a plastic rocker power button with an aluminum circle, and developing new hinges for the dust cover that can hold it open at any angle.
Interestingly, LoveFrom’s work on the Linn Sondek LP12-50 was done pro bono, without any financial arrangement or contract between the two firms. Jony Ive explains that a significant portion of their work is driven by a passion for what they do, while their revenue primarily comes from longer-term contracts with clients like Airbnb and Ferrari.
