Legislators to study AI and internet access by minors and property tax assessment methodology this summer

The South Dakota Legislature’s Executive Board has chosen (May 26, 2024) topics to be covered by summer study committees.

One involves artificial intelligence and regulation of internet access by minors and the other is a review of property tax assessment methodology.

House Republican party leader Representative Will Mortenson of Fort Pierre says legislators submit ideas for subjects they’d like delve deeper into.

Senate Republican party leader Senator Casey Crabtree of Madison says the summer study committee will determine what role, if any, state law should have.

As far as property tax assessment methodology, Mortenson explains what he wants to see from the group.

Representative Mike Weisgram from Fort Pierre, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, would like to see a deeper dive into eminent domain.

Mortenson says other topics may be looked into in a less formal manner.

There will also be a select committee chosen to look into the upcoming expansion of Ellsworth Air Force Base.
