Colleen Ballinger’s (Miranda Sings) legal team has responded to accusations of blackface by providing an explanation for the resurfaced video.
A day after a video of Colleen Ballinger, also known as Miranda Sings, resurfaced, showing her apparently wearing black greasepaint while performing Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” Ballinger’s legal representatives have spoken out against the accusations of blackface. They claim that the suggestion is wholly false, and they provide a backstory to explain the video. According to Ballinger’s law firm, prior to her performance of “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” she performed a song from the musical Wicked called “As Long As You’re Mine,” during which she wore green facepaint to resemble the musical’s character Elphaba, the protagonist witch. After that performance, Ballinger went straight into “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” while still in makeup, as it was her customary way of ending her shows.
As reported by Variety, this controversy arises just one week after Ballinger faced accusations of grooming young fans and engaging in inappropriate relationships with teenagers. In a video released at the end of June, Ballinger addressed these accusations, calling them lies and rumors while acknowledging her mistake in responding to fans. This is not the first time she has faced backlash for her actions, as in 2020 she issued an apology for impersonating Latina women, expressing shame and embarrassment for her cultural insensitivity and emphasizing that racial stereotypes should never be joked about.
