Larian Studios recently unveiled the highest difficulty level in the highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3, promising to challenge even the most seasoned Dungeons & Dragons players.
Known as Tactician, this difficulty level offers the most intense experience in the game, according to senior combat designer Matt Holland. In a live show with other Larian Studios developers, he discussed the intricacies of this challenging mode.
Tactician draws inspiration from the Tactician difficulty level in Divinity: Original Sin 2. It incorporates features such as aggressive artificial intelligence and stronger enemy stats. Additionally, Larian Studios has added “little bits of spice” to intensify enemy encounters.
Speaking about the difficulty, Holland explained, “We have it in two layers: there’s the base layer that affects all characters in the game, such as increased HP or improved hit rates. Then there’s the local layer where we have enhanced each combat encounter with additional challenges to make it even harder.”
In a demonstration, Holland showcased the difference between a Balanced battle and a Tactician battle. Two Monks faced off against a group of goblins, with the latter scenario including goblins launching fire arrows and blocking the main town entrance with explosive barrels. The result was the Monks being swiftly defeated in just one turn.
Creative director Swen Vincke added that in Tactician mode, enemies will prioritize targeting spellcasters using multi-turn “concentration” spells, further disrupting the player’s strategy. Vincke shared a lighthearted remark, saying, “You’ll start playing on Tactician because you think you can handle it, and then you’ll start crying. Don’t blame our game — it’s not our fault! It’s you!”
Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch on PC on August 3 and on PS5 on September 6. In other gaming news, Square Enix surprised fans by announcing that Final Fantasy 16 will be transformed into a musical performed by the all-female Takarazuka Revue theatre troupe.
