With new artificial intelligence technology emerging, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion Friday calling on staffers to find ways of incorporating such systems to improve operations citywide.

The motion requests a report back with information regarding any current use of AI in city government, as well as recommendations to possibly use AI systems within all city departments. The report will also include information on best practices to ensure that AI systems are used to “enhance” and not replace personnel, increase productivity and improve worker protections.

The motion was co-written by council members Imelda Padilla and Bob Blumenfield. Councilman Tim McOsker seconded the motion.

“As AI technology rapidly evolves, and the city of Los Angeles needs to be proactive and prepare for how we embrace its potential for enhancing city operations and services,” Padilla said prior to the vote.
