Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is set to release on Netflix on December 22nd and is shaping up to be a unique space opera epic that differentiates itself from Star Wars. The initial pitch for the film was made to Lucasfilm over a decade ago where Snyder envisioned a more mature take on the Star Wars franchise, but with a focus on a new part of the universe, showcasing a group of atypical warriors coming together to fight the Empire. However, the pitch was rejected after the Disney acquisition, and the project became a Netflix original, featuring an impressive cast.
A recent update from Netflix unveiled the cast and characters, with Deadpool and Maleficent star Ed Skrein set to play Admiral Atticus Noble, the film’s primary villain. Skrein described his character as “the harshest type of military savageness. You see a ruthless, cold man who has chosen horror over morality for the directness of it. In a world where morality is waning, he has cast morality aside in the name of ambition.”
While the description may remind viewers of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Star Wars franchise, it is clear that Rebel Moon is a unique and standalone film. Netflix is confident that the film will perform well as there are plans for a sequel, plus a variety of multimedia tie-ins are already in production. Snyder seems to have had total creative freedom to tell the story he envisioned, making Rebel Moon an exciting project for fans of the space opera genre.
