Phase 4 of the MCU has had its ups and downs in terms of quality, but one area where Marvel Studios consistently excels is in their casting choices. From the iconic performance of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man to the impressive newcomers like Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk, Marvel knows how to find talented actors for their projects. However, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” reveals that one casting decision could have gone in a different direction. Kathryn Newton, who plays Cassie Lang, originally auditioned for the role of Kate Bishop in “Hawkeye.”
Newton even had a screen test with Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, and Hailee Steinfeld, who eventually landed the role of Bishop. While Newton didn’t secure the role in the Disney+ series, her screen test caught the attention of “Quantumania” director Peyton Reed. Reed had previously seen Newton’s screen test for another Marvel role and was impressed by her talent and charisma. He ultimately cast her as Cassie, the daughter of Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), who will have a more prominent role in the upcoming “Ant-Man” movie.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Cassie was played by Emma Fuhrmann, but the character was aged up for “Quantumania,” resulting in Newton replacing Fuhrmann. Reed explained that Newton’s athleticism and ability to embody the qualities of Scott Lang’s daughter made her the perfect fit for the role.
Furhmann’s recasting caused some controversy when she revealed that she found out she had been replaced through online news. Despite the disappointment, she remains grateful for her time in the MCU and looks forward to future opportunities in her acting career.
