Joe Locke Reveals His Favorite Storyline

The Big Picture

  • Heartstopper Season 2 delves into the captivating relationship between Toa and Elle, providing a beautifully crafted storyline.
  • The Netflix adaptation expands the focus on supporting characters, highlighting the dynamics of Toa and Elle, Tara and Darcy, and Isaac.
  • The upcoming season maintains the innocence of teenage romances while exploring more mature conflicts, resonating with its queer audience. It strikes a perfect balance between depth and relatability.

Heartstopper gained immense popularity after its release on Netflix last year, and now the young adult romance series returns for another season. Based on the graphic novel and ongoing webcomic by Alice Oseman, Season 2 will bring back Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick and Charlie, two schoolboys who find love. However, Locke has expressed that his favorite storyline in the upcoming season, which premieres on August 3, focuses on Toa and Elle, portrayed by William Gao and Yasmin Finney respectively, rather than the main characters.

In an interview with TV Insider, Locke commended the Netflix adaptation for staying true to the source material while giving more focus to the supporting cast. He stated, “With many adaptations, you inevitably lose some elements of the story. However, our show manages to retain everything and creates additional space for the other characters. The comics primarily revolve around Nick and Charlie, but the show provides a larger ensemble, which is fantastic. In this season, we see a lot of development in Toa and Elle’s relationship, as well as Tara [Corinna Brown] and Darcy’s [Kizzy Edgell] relationship. Additionally, Isaac gets his moment to shine because Tobie [Donovan] is an incredible actor who deserves the spotlight.”

The Real Spotlight Stealers

Contrary to expectations, Toa and Elle’s relationship steals the spotlight in this season, according to Locke. He shares, “The Toa and Elle story this season is my favorite out of all the stories. It is beautifully portrayed, surpassing the notion that Heartstopper simplifies teenage relationships.” Regarding their blossoming romance, Locke explains, “The story of Toa and Elle involves complexities and uncertainties. It’s an intriguing ‘will they, won’t they’ dynamic, different from Nick and Charlie’s relationship. This season of Heartstopper aims to showcase diverse types of relationships.”

One of the defining aspects of Heartstopper is its portrayal of innocent teenage relationships and the struggles faced by characters in their journey of self-discovery. This resonates strongly with the queer audience. Season 2 continues to capture this essence, delving into more mature conflicts while maintaining its innate innocence. Locke affirms, “Heartstopper remains true to its essence. It will never be an explicit show. However, this season embraces a deeper level of maturity, especially in the later episodes, where conflicts take a more mature form.”
