Jimmy Palmiotti Criticizes Direct Market’s Misplaced Priorities

Renowned comic book writer, Jimmy Palmiotti, has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for his latest project, Triggergirl 6. Teaming up with artists Juan Santacruz and Amanda Conner, Palmiotti aims to bring readers an action-packed, mature audience title filled with adventure, drama, romance, and tons of action.

In a recent interview conducted during his visit to San Diego Comic-Con, Palmiotti shared his thoughts on the event. He expressed his excitement about the positive reception from artists and publishers, who noted both great attendance numbers and an increased interest in comic books among new fans. Despite the absence of major studios, Palmiotti emphasized the wonderful experience he had at the convention.

When asked about his collaboration preferences for Triggergirl 6, Palmiotti suggested names outside the usual realm of comic book creators. He mentioned acclaimed author Hugh Howey, known for his successful sci-fi series “Wool,” for his unique take on the character. Additionally, Palmiotti expressed admiration for Stephen King, whose perspective would undoubtedly add an exciting dimension to Triggergirl 6. Lastly, he playfully mentioned Quentin Tarantino, citing his distinct character voices and undeniable talent.

Curious about Palmiotti’s continued use of Kickstarter for crowdfunding, we asked why he prefers it over other platforms like Patreon or Substack. In response, Palmiotti humorously dismissed the idea of offering his body on street corners, explaining that he has found success with Kickstarter. With over 20 campaigns funded through the platform, Palmiotti values the strong relationship he has built with his supporters and appreciates their belief in his work. While each platform offers unique benefits, Kickstarter remains his primary choice for now.

Addressing the current state of the comic book industry, Palmiotti acknowledged the slow sales in the traditional direct market. In his opinion, the market’s focus on gimmicks and constant character reboots alienates longtime readers. Palmiotti emphasizes the importance of consistency and believes the industry could benefit from a shift in attention.

Regarding Triggergirl 6 and its target audience, Palmiotti expressed that his books primarily cater to adult readers. While he appreciates works that appeal to all ages, he focuses on producing content that resonates with his passionate audience. Although his stories have an all-ages message at their core, Palmiotti chooses a more adult approach to storytelling. He acknowledges the room for diverse voices in the industry and believes there is space for both his work and the popular slice-of-life all-ages genre.

In response to a playful question about the origins of Triggergirl 6, Palmiotti emphasized the underlying message of the character’s creation. He aims to bring hope to a world plagued by environmental destruction caused by human greed. The focus of the new book revolves around rare animal smugglers who cater to the rich. While Palmiotti has tried exotic meats out of curiosity, he admits that it doesn’t appeal to him, preferring a simple diet centered around pizza.

Lastly, Palmiotti shares his triggers, expressing frustration with people who take pride in ignorance, lack of manners, and those who attempt to dictate how he should do his job. He also despises individuals who mistreat others and considers greed in all its forms as a major issue.

As the interview concluded, Palmiotti praised his longtime collaborator, Joe Quesada, for his accomplishments outside of comics. Acknowledging Quesada’s diverse talents as an artist, writer, performer, and filmmaker, Palmiotti commended his latest film and expressed excitement for future projects.

Through this interview, Jimmy Palmiotti provides insights into his creative process, his thoughts on the industry, and hints at what readers can expect from his new project, Triggergirl 6.
