During a press tour for the horror-comedy film Haunted Mansion, Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis revealed in an interview with Collider that she is still experiencing new things on set, despite her long and successful career. One of these new experiences was working with motion capture technology in the new Disney movie.
Curtis explained to Perri Nemiroff that she had never before done any motion capture work. However, in order to bring her onscreen character, Madam Leota, to life, she had to undergo the procedure of having dots placed on her face for motion capture. Interestingly, she did not have to wear the full motion capture suit, as they were only capturing her facial movements. Instead, she wore a neck brace to keep her head still while delivering her lines. Curtis then discussed her thoughts on the difference between this kind of technology and artificial intelligence:
“The visual effects level is all technology. Once you know how to do that, it’s science. The performing part is not science, which is why AI will never work because emotions are real and they come from human beings. They don’t come from machines. So to watch beautiful actors do that kind of work, under those circumstances, is something very impressive to me.”
In addition to her experience with motion capture, Curtis mentioned that she has worked with green and blue screens in the past, particularly in films like the Halloween franchise and the Academy Award-winning sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once. However, she expressed admiration for the emotional work done by actors involved in motion capture, especially considering the challenges they face while wearing camera-covered suits.
The upcoming film Haunted Mansion is based on the iconic Disney theme park ride. It follows a woman and her son as they move into a haunted house filled with ghosts. The star-studded cast includes Winona Ryder, Rosario Dawson, Jared Leto, Owen Wilson, Dan Levy, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Hasan Minhaj, and Danny DeVito.
Haunted Mansion is set to premiere in theaters on July 28. Check out the trailer and the full interview with Jamie Lee Curtis above.
