James Wan, a Dual Expert, Elucidates Why Horror can Outshine Blockbusters

Rarely do we encounter horror franchises that not only make a significant impact but also set the standard for future installments. While classic slasher films like “Halloween” and “Scream” achieved this status, contemporary titles like “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” have become the epitome of modern horror due to their captivating storytelling and devotion to the genre.

The credit for these achievements goes to filmmaker James Wan, the driving force behind these movies and their sequels. So when he shared his perspectives on the genre’s potential, it was worth paying attention. In an interview with MovieWeb, Wan revealed how the horror landscape is evolving over time, with one noticeable change being the release schedule.

According to Wan, winter is no longer the designated time for major horror releases. Instead, what matters most are engaging storylines and innovative approaches to traditional horror tropes. He further emphasized that these characteristics are why the younger generation has developed a strong interest in horror films.

“I believe this shift is largely due to changing audience preferences. Younger audiences are drawn to the horror genre. While horror has always been popular and present, what I discovered with ‘The Conjuring’ is that if you create a movie that truly resonates with people and connects with them, the release date becomes less important. Although there is still an art to releasing a film, the cinema landscape has changed so much in recent years that a horror film released in the summer can compete with big blockbusters.”

This statement holds particular significance with the release of “Insidious: The Red Door,” the fifth installment in the “Insidious” franchise, hitting theaters today. Despite facing competition from other highly successful franchises that commonly debut around this time of year, this film’s strong narrative and commitment to horror will undoubtedly make it stand out from the crowd.
