Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios Working on PS5 Exclusive Online Multiplayer Game: Report

Haven Studios, the newly formed game development studio by former Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs producer Jade Raymond, is reportedly working on an ‘online service’ game for PlayStation.

The report comes from Italian publication Multiplayer.it, who claim to have obtained the information from their own sources hinting at recruitments for a games-as-a-service title.

Haven Studios was revealed on a PlayStation blog post in March, but there was no information provided on what games the studio is working on. It was previously reported that Haven’s first title as a new independent studio will be a new IP in collaboration with Sony. It’s interesting to see Haven Entertainment, which has many well known creatives who’ve formerly worked on Ubisoft’s big AAA games, work on an online title.

Raymond hasn’t commented on the nature of the game that the studio is working on, but one of her recent blog posts (spotted via VGC) does seem hint at a Games-as-a-service title.

“The pivot of many of the game industry’s biggest franchises from premium launches to the games as a service (GaaS) model — Grand Theft Auto to Grand Theft Auto Online, for example, or Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six to Siege) — was one important step toward two-way engagement, but the fully realized vision for this new generation of highly social, tech-savvy, creative multitaskers is a network model.”

While Sony hasn’t gone on a studio acquisition spree like Microsoft, the company has made it clear that their acquisitions are “very selective” as per PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst.

“We’re very selective about the developers that we bring in,” said Hulst in an interview with GQ in June. “Our last new acquisition was Insomniac [for $229 million in 2019], which has worked out very well. I’m always looking for people that have a similar set of values, similar creative ambitions and work very well with our team that we can further invest in and help grow as creators. It’s not like we’re going around and just making random acquisitions.”

Since the start of 2021, Sony has made some interesting choices regarding their studio acquisitions and partnerships. The company recently acquired Returnal developer Housemarque, followed by acquiring Nixxes Software. Before these, PlayStation announced its partnerships with newly founded Deviation Games and Firewalk Studios, both of which include veterans who have worked on well-known multiplayer franchises. After the smash success of the PlayStation 4 supported by blockbuster single-player games, it looks like Sony is bringing its multiplayer offerings for PS5 on the same level.
