The Thrustmaster eSwap Pro XR controller may not immediately strike you as exceptional, but with a little patience, experimentation, and practice, its true potential starts to reveal itself. Here’s what makes it stand out:

What We Love:
– Exceptional customization options that allow you to tailor the controller to your preferences
– Easy-to-use system for swapping out different parts and experimenting with configurations
– The racing wheel module provides precise control for driving games
– Functionality of a Pro Controller, perfect for serious players
– Impressive optimization settings that cater to advanced gamers

What We Don’t Love:
– The gamepad lacks wireless capabilities
– The Racing Wheel module has a learning curve and may take time to get used to
– No textured grips, which could impact comfort and control
– Relatively high price point

In contrast to the high-speed action found in Forza Horizon 5, my initial appreciation for the Thrustmaster eSwap Pro XR controller was a slower process. The eSwap Pro XR boasts two main features: the ability to interchange modules for a personalized setup, and the racing wheel module that emulates a steering wheel, albeit on a smaller scale. While it may take some time to adjust, with experimentation and practice, the eSwap Pro XR truly grows on you.

As depicted in the image above, the eSwap Pro comes with two analog sticks, a D-Pad, and a miniature racing wheel. These modules can be effortlessly swapped out to suit your preferences and the game you’re playing, ensuring maximum comfort.

For regular games, you can choose the classic layout of two analog sticks and a D-Pad. Additionally, you can reposition the D-Pad to make it more prominent. Alternatively, if you remove the D-Pad altogether, the four rear buttons automatically serve as directional buttons for in-game shortcuts. This modular system is straightforward and uncomplicated.

Without the racing wheel module, the eSwap functions as a genuine Pro Controller, complete with trigger locks and mechanical buttons that enhance responsiveness in online shooters. Its stylish design features a black and white color scheme, complemented by pink racing stripes and the Forza Horizon 5 logo.

While the grips on the eSwap XR Pro resemble those on Xbox Pro Controllers, the lack of textured grips stands out. Personally, I would have preferred the racing stripes to envelop the controller for a more cohesive look. Some users may also feel disappointed that the eSwap Pro is a wired controller, lacking the freedom of wireless connectivity. However, the advantage is that you won’t have to worry about battery life, and the included cable is long enough for comfortable sofa gaming.

The standout feature of the Thrustmaster eSwap Pro XR Forza Edition is undoubtedly the racing wheel module, aiming to replicate the driving experience. With a 95° rotation angle and a non-slip surface, it enables precise control over your trajectories and drifts.

Mastering this module requires an adjustment period. Initially, you may find yourself using it like a traditional analog stick during races. However, once you slow down and treat it like a steering wheel, you’ll experience heightened control over your vehicle. This results in a smoother racing experience, providing a greater sense of immersion, although it falls slightly short of a proper racing wheel.

This brings us to the main drawback of the Thrustmaster eSwap Pro XR Forza Edition. Despite its versatility, it doesn’t quite match the performance of a racing wheel and falls a couple of steps below a Pro Controller. Consequently, the price of £169.99 may deter some potential buyers.

Nevertheless, the eSwap’s versatility, thanks to its Hot-Swap technology and customizable features, ensures that it caters to your specific needs and puts you in command of your gaming experience. With its outstanding build quality, mechanical buttons, and eye-catching design, this officially-licensed Xbox gamepad holds strong appeal for racing enthusiasts and dedicated gamers.

VERDICT: 3.5/5
