Is Carrie Aidan’s Mr. Big?

Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for season 2 of “And Just Like That” and discusses the relationships between Carrie Bradshaw, Mr. Big, and Aidan Shaw on “Sex and the City”.

In the sequel series “And Just Like That…”, both Mr. Big and Aidan return, bringing with them a level of drama and heartache that affected all parties involved. While Carrie’s pain over Mr. Big is well-documented, Aidan’s feelings are often overlooked. However, his recent appearances highlight the deep scars he carries from his relationship with Carrie, positioning him as Carrie’s “big love.”

The history of heartache between Carrie and Aidan is an essential part of their dynamic. Mr. Big first appeared in the original series premiere in 1998, and his emotionally unavailable nature led to the end of their relationship. Meanwhile, Carrie meets Aidan in Season 3, and their connection is built on genuine care and trust, which contrasts with Big’s behavior. However, their relationship takes a devastating turn when Carrie and Big engage in an affair, showing that Carrie is capable of infidelity despite Aidan’s goodness and commitment to their relationship.

While Aidan and Carrie attempt to revive their romance in later seasons, they ultimately never fully reconcile. In “And Just Like That…”, Aidan’s return reveals the lasting impact of their previous breakup. Aidan’s hesitation to enter Carrie’s apartment, the place where their relationship ended, indicates the depth of his emotional scars. This time, they choose to stay in a hotel instead, avoiding the weight of their past issues. This glossing over of their history raises concerns about whether they have properly addressed their obstacles and found closure.

Aidan’s love for Carrie mirrors the dynamic between Carrie and Big. Just as Carrie repeatedly returns to Big despite the pain he causes, Aidan continues to pursue Carrie, even after being hurt. Aidan encompasses the role of Carrie’s “big love” – a significant, albeit secondary, figure in her life. While Carrie does love Aidan, her heart ultimately belongs to Big. Aidan’s determination to make things work and his proposal reflect Carrie’s own persistence in pursuing Big, ultimately highlighting the similarity in their relationships.

While we hope for a positive outcome for Aidan and his pursuit of closure and happiness, it is apparent that Big will always have a powerful presence in Carrie’s life. Aidan deserves the chance to experience his own “big love” without Big interfering, and perhaps the third time will be the charm for him.
