Is Apple Developing a Rollable iPhone? Their Latest Patent Hints Towards it

Apple engineers are currently exploring the possibility of developing an iPhone with a rollable screen, as well as a foldable iPhone, according to a recently published patent. The patent also suggests that this display technology could be utilized in iPads and desktop screens.

As discovered by Patently Apple (via Tom’s Guide), the patent outlines “electronic devices with rollable displays” that can transition between a flat, unrolled state and a rolled state for storage.

The accompanying diagrams in the patent depict a screen resembling a rolled-up piece of parchment. The display can expand when needed and retract when necessary.

This concept offers an interesting alternative to existing devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which provides a tablet-sized screen that can be folded and easily carried in a pocket. Rollable displays offer similar benefits if the technology can be successfully developed by manufacturers.

Keep on Rolling

This is not the first time Apple has filed a patent for this type of display – previous patents date all the way back to 2014. However, it seems that rollable screen technology is now nearing the point of being incorporated into consumer devices. Foldable phones have already become widely available after several years of development, and rollables could be the next innovation.

It’s worth noting that Apple is not the only company researching this type of display. Both LG and Samsung have demonstrated prototypes of rollable screens for their own products, although they are still in the early stages of development.

At Mobile World Congress this year, Motorola showcased a concept for a rollable phone. The device’s screen could expand from 5 inches to 6.5 inches with the push of a button. This serves as a preview of what’s to come, and it suggests that Apple is actively pursuing this technology.

Remember, patents only indicate areas of exploration and experimentation for companies – there is no guarantee that they will result in a final product, no matter how interesting they may be. In the meantime, we can expect the release of the iPhone 15 in September before any potential rollable iPhone becomes available.
