Intel XMM 8160 5G Modem Announced, to be Used by Apple’s Next Generation iPhones

The 5G network support is now on its way to leading manufacturers, and Intel is one of the early one to announce its plan. The company has announced its plan for 5G network by showcasing the new XMM 8160 5G modem. Apple’s Next Generation iPhones might be the early devices to equip this one.

The XMM 8160 5G Modem is set to be released in the second quarter of 2019 for manufacturers. It promises up to 6Gbps speeds on a wide range of devices such as phones, PCs and home broadband. It will support both the standalone and non-standalone specs for the 5G NR (New Radio) standard, as well as a support for the previous 4G, 3G, and 2G networks all in one chipset.

“The Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will enable device manufacturers to design smaller and more power-efficient devices. This can be achieved without the added complexity, power management, and form factor adjustments of two separate modems for 5G and legacy connectivity, as will be introduced in early competing 5G modems,” Intel said while explaining that the XMM 8160 won’t consume extra space and battery.

Aside from a wide range of network support, the XMM 8160 5G Modem also supports millimetre-wave (mmWave) spectrum as well as frequencies between 600MHz and 6GHz to make it compatible with carriers worldwide.

Companies such as Samsung, Nokia/HMD, Sony, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, HTC, LG, Asus, ZTE, Sharp, Fujitsu, and OnePlus are working with Qualcomm and its Snapdragon X50 5G NR modems. It seems that Intel needs to do some work here, but we can see that Apple just started using Intel Modems for its 2018 models.

It is only practical to think that Apple is already set to use Intel’s XMM 8160 5G Modem to power up its next generation iPhones in 2019. Stay tuned with TechnoCodex and we will bring you all of its updates.
