Intel Product Roadmap Shows 10nm Xeon Ice Lake Server Chips In 2020

Intel has revealed the timeline of future launches of processors scheduled from 2018 to 2020 by the company at its Data Centric Innovation Summit in Santa Clara where Intel shared Xeon roadmap by confirming Cascade Lake, Copper Lake, and Ice Lake SP platforms.

Starting this year Cascade Lake would make its appearance in the market by the end of the year. It will feature CPUs capable to support hardware security by protecting from side-channel attacks with the help of partitioning. It will include a new integrated memory controller that will allow support for Optane DC accomplished to deliver fast and affordable memory technology that will drive performance gains for certain analytics queries around eight times that of configurations that rely on DRAM only.

The executive vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group at Intel Navin Shenoy said with the expanded product portfolio and a broader strategy targeting technology markets Intel will hit about $200 billion by 2022 of which the company at present holds about 20 percent.

Following Cascade Lake, Cooper Lake-SP processors will arrive in the market by 2019 and would attract the maximum attraction as with this new AI extension called Bfloat16 would come into existence that will speed up AI and deep learning training which is Google’s new floating-point format. This processor is an attempt to fill the gap between existing 14nm and long-awaited 10nm processors. Among the lineup, Ice lake would be the last to arrive making to the markets in 2020.

The new roadmap came after little unease with Intel which has been caused due to delay in launching 10nm processors in the universe where AMD would come up with 7nm processors probably with the start of the New Year. The other factor could be the space of data center chip becoming more competitive with peers vying for healthy market share.
