Intel and Naver are reportedly joining forces to challenge Nvidia’s leading position in the AI chip market. According to a report in Bloomberg, the collaboration between the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker and South Korea’s internet giant focuses on expanding the software ecosystem for Intel’s Gaudi AI accelerator, an open-source platform. This partnership is part of a growing effort to loosen Nvidia’s grip on the sector, especially as difficulties arise in obtaining GPU accelerators for training AI models.
“The current monopoly situation has to change in order to expand the market and address the limitations in AI development caused by the GPU supply chain,” said Ha Jung-Woo, head of Naver’s Future AI Center, during an Intel AI conference held in Seoul, as per the report. Ha is a key figure behind Naver’s HyperClova X family of large language models.
This alliance is further solidified by the recent establishment of a joint AI chip research lab accessible to leading South Korean universities and startups.
